Annual pilgrimage to the St Thaddeus Apostle Monastery

On July 15 a group of Armenian Foreign Ministry staff attended annual ritual and pilgrimage of St Thaddeus and visited St Stepanos Monastery as well. The ceremony this year was dedicated to the 850^th anniversary of the death of Nerses the Gracious. Archbishop Grigor Chiftchian, the Prelate of the Armenian Diocese of Atrpatakan, received the Armenian guests in St Thaddeus Monastery. The attendees in the ceremony also were Arsen Avagyan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the R. of Armenia to the I.R. of Iran, diplomats from the Armenian Embassy and Morteza Abedin Varamin, Iran’s Consul General in the Armenian city of Kapan.

Together with St. Stepanos Monastery and the Chapel of Dzordzor, St. Thaddeus was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2008 under the name “Armenian Monastic Ensembles of Iran”. All three sites are located in West Azarbaijan and are of high significance from historical and cultural perspectives.

Also added to UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2020, is the annual three-day pilgrimage to St. Thaddeus Apostle Monastery in northwestern Iran held each July.

St. Thaddeus, has always been a place of high spiritual value. It is still today a living place of pilgrimage for the Armenian Church.
