18th meeting of Armenia - Iran Joint Economic Commission inked 19 co-op documents in Tehran

The 18th meeting of the Iran-Armenia Joint Economic Committee was held in Tehran during February 14-15, in which the two sides signed 19 documents and Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) to enhance cooperation in various areas. The 18th session was held under the co-chairmanship of Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan and Vice President and Head of the Plan and Budget Organization (PBO)of the I.R. of Iran, Davood Manzoor. It was attended by senior officials from the two sides. At the end of the session, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed, and the parties reached an agreement aimed at the development of relations in all areas of mutual interest between Armenia and Iran.

  • Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan, who was in Tehran on a working visit, had a meeting with the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi. During the meeting, Mher Grigoryan highly appreciated the clear position of the top leadership of the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding the territorial integrity and inviolability of the sovereignty of the Republic of Armenia and Issues related to economic cooperation between Armenia and Iran were discussed as well.

The meeting was preceded by a bilateral meeting with the Vice President of the Islamic Republic of Iran and co-chair of the commission, Davood Manzoor, during which both sides underlined the high level of political relations between Armenia and Iran and the great potential for the development of trade and economic relations.

The signing of the contract on the extension of the previous "Gas-for-electricity" project in 2023 and the involvement of Iranian companies in the construction works of the Agarak-Kajaran 32 km road segment were highlighted. Deputy Prime Minister Grigoryan expressed hope that the construction works of the third line of Iran-Armenia high-voltage power transmission line will be completed this year.

  • Bilateral meetings in the sidelines of the commission
  • On February 14, within the framework of the 18th session of the Armenian-Iranian intergovernmental joint commission, Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia Vahan Kostanyan had meetings with Mehdi Safari and Ali Bagher Kani, Deputy Foreign Ministers of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan and Deputy Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mehdi Safari exchanged views on cooperation in areas of mutual interest, such as economy, infrastructure, energy, and others. The parties emphasized the need for consistent contacts between representatives of the business circles of the two countries and the need to expand joint investment programs. The importance of completing the Kajaran-Agarak road section by the deadlines set by the Iranian companies was emphasized. The Deputy Minister briefed his Iranian counterparts on the details of the "Crossroads of Peace" project.
  • Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani discussed regional security issues. The Armenian side briefed on the current state of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. In this regard, the repeatedly reiterated position of the leadership of Iran on the territorial integrity of Armenia and the inviolability of borders was highly commended.
  • On the sidelines of the commission, Narek Teryan, Deputy Minister of Economy met with the Head of Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization (TPO) Mehdi Zeighami. The interlocutors underlined the position of Armenia as a gateway to link east to Eurasia by developing their transportation infrastructure at borders and discussed the further cooperation possibilities.
  • An experts’ meeting also was held in the Iran Ports and Maritime Organization, in this meeting the sides discussed the possibilities of cooperation in trade by using ports.
  • In a meeting between Head of International Department at State Revenue Committee of the Republic of Armenia, Nerses Zeynalyan and Morteza Khodsaee, Head of the international cooperations dept. of the I.R. of Iran Customs Administration the sides pointed out the necessity for further cooperation of two countries in the field of customs.
  • In another meeting between Deputy Minister of Healthcare of Armenia Lena Nanushyan and Iran’s Food and Drug Administration (IFDA) Heidar Mohammadi, Mohammadi voiced the country’s readiness to export domestically produced drugs to Armenia. For her part, Deputy Minister of Healthcare of Armenia Lena Nanushyan said that Iran has made significant progress in the production of medicines and medical equipment. Lena Nanushyan noted that Armenia welcomes cooperation with Iran in the field of health tourism, pharmaceutical insurance and healthcare.
