Tribute to Omar Khayyam in Shahid Chamran University

On May 22, on the occasion of the International Day of Omar Khayyam and as a tribute to the Iranian great polymath a same-day conference was held in Shahid Chamran University in Ahvaz by the initiative of the faculty of Literature and Humanities of the same University.

The event was launched by national anthems of I.R. of Iran and R. of Armenia. In the first part of the program message of Arsen Avagyan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the R. of Armenia, sent for the Day was read.

Excerpts of the Message of the Armenian Ambassador:

“As the topic of the Conference shows, Omar Khayyam is a universal figure belonging to the international public, to all nations and for all times; a scientist, a mathematician, a philosopher, an astrologist, a physician and a poet. Though in the first place Khayyam is well-known for his quatrains, rubaiyat.

Khayyam reached perfection and excellence in his genre and is recognized as a scholar in the world literature, in Armenia the quatrains of Khayyam have been translated numerously into Armenian by translators such as: Arshak Chobanyan,Hovsep Mirzayan, Arshak Atayan and Sergey Umaryan. The Armenian scholar with an extensive study on Khayyam is Edward Aghayan.

Rubaiyats of Khayyam are the best models in Persian Literature inspiring numerous poems because of his beautiful similes and lofty thoughts. Hafez can be ranked among one of his followers.

A large number of quatrains have been attributed to Khayyam, though because of the existing controversies among the scholars it is difficult to specify the authenticity of all off them. The Iranian well-known academics and experts of oriental studies have extensive studies in this regard.

The Iranian poets as: Ferdowsi, Khayyam, Sa’adi and Hafez are widely known in Armenia, Armenian have special affection toward them. It is because of this affection and interest that, these figures are often and on various occasions honored in the Faculty of Oriental studies and department of Iranian studies of Yerevan State University”.
