Meeting of RA NA President and IRI Foreign Minister Held: Iran is for Stable Development of the Region

On October 22, the RA NA President Alen Simonyan received the delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) Hossein Amirabdollahian. Welcoming the guests, Alen Simonyan noted that he warmly remembers the effective meeting held in Tehran in June.

He underlined the importance of the neighbourly relations with friendly Iran, stressing that the efforts aimed at their development bear their fruits. “The opening of your Consulate General in the regional centre of Syunik Kapan is a fact, I congratulate all of us on the occasion of that important event,” Alen Simonyan noted, adding that Armenia will strive for opening a Consulate of our country in Tabriz in the near future.

The IRI Foreign Minister expressed his gratitude for the congratulation, underscoring that the establishment of the Consulate General in Kapan contains an important message, according to which, Iran is against the obstacles towards the border with friendly Armenia or transit road and is for the development of the region. He also added that they are interested in opening a Consulate General of Armenia in Tabriz.

Both sides recorded that the IRI Consulate General with its activities will promote the more effective realization of the potential existing in trade-economic, transport, energy and in a number of other spheres in Syunik Region. The sides touched upon the issues of security and lasting peace of the region

One of the key issues has been the Armenian-Iranian strategic dialogue in all directions, as well as the perspective of reaching the trade turnover between the countries to 1 billion USD. The Foreign Minister of Iran noted that one billion USD can be reached in one phase, and in the second, more perspective phase he considered reaching to three billion USD trade turnover.

At the end of the meeting the RA NA President Alen Simonyan conveyed his greetings to the Speaker of the Majles of Iran Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, noting the he expects his colleague in Armenia.
