“Avesta” of Zoroastrianism translated into Armenian

“Avesta” the most ancient scriptures of Zoroastrianism, the faith in Iran before pre-Islamic period, recently has been translated into Armenian by Edward Haghverdian, Armenian distinguished poet and translator of Iranian literature, the work has been published by Antares publishing and media holding in Armenia. Some excerpts of this unique religious text had been translated into Armenian before, the recent translation from its Farsi version is the complete version though.

The ceremony of the debut took place on October 21,2022 in the center of the “Society of the Writers of Armenia”, among the speakers in the ceremony were; Edward Militonyan, head of the society, Arkemnik Nicoghosyan,Anahid Aramouny,Gevirk Asadryan,Tadeus Donoyan, Tigran Davtyan and Hossein Tabatabaei, Adviser of the Cultural Center of the Embassy of the I.R. of Iran in Armenia, who had remarks on the occasion and extended their appreciaton to the translator for his efforts.

The history of Avesta dates back to 2500 ago, its songs or hymns were oral by initiation later they were written in Zend-Avesta. The manuscripts of the original have been destroyed when Alexander of Macedonia conquered Persia. In later periods the hymns were translated into Pahlavi based the oral songs. The extant Farsi translations of Avesta have been done by Iranian studies scholars and distinguished translators; Jalil Doustkhah (1933-), Ebrahim Pourdavoud (1885-1968) and James Darmesteter (1849-1894), for the Armenian translation of Avesta these versions have been based.
